Under the blue sky, the river Dakatiya is beautiful

With the change of seasons, under the blue sky, the Dakatiya river of the greater Laksam tradition of Comilla has taken shape. The river has regained its youth in the rain water. In the rural areas, nature seems to have given away endless possibilities and unique natural beauty. The river is full of beauty and gives pleasure to those who are thirsty for travel. The variety of fish found in the river and the water in the river during the boro season meet the needs of the farmers in agriculture.

Dakatiya is a Bangladesh-India transboundary river. The river is about 206 km long and about 8 m (220 ft) wide. It is a tributary of the Meghna. Originating from the hills of the Indian state of Tripura, it enters Bangladesh through Bagsara in Comilla district and later flows through Chandpur and Laxmipur districts. The river crosses Laksam, Nangalkot and Manoharganj in Comilla, Shahrasti and Hajiganj upazilas in Chandpur and joins the Chandpur Meghna river. The nature of the river is spiral.
There are various theories about the naming of the Dakatiya river. Once upon a time, Mug-Firingi pirates used to enter Noakhali and Comilla districts through this river and rob the river. The river is thought to have been named Dakatiya due to the nuisance of the robbers. According to some, people on both sides of the Dakatia River lost everything. Salilsamadhi of many people has been written while trying to save lives. It has been named Dakatia river because it is omnivorous like a robber.
Although the river lost its youth in the dry season due to non-excavation of dacoits, the beauty of the river has returned in the monsoon season. Most of the places in Laksam, Manoharganj and Nangalkot parts of Dakatiya now give pleasure to the travel thirsty. Under the blue sky, the river is decorated in a colorful way. Dakatia is now tweeting in the water. It is eye-catching to see. At this time the people in the mechanical town also came to the village to see the beauty of the river. They run away with joy in their minds and get robbed. Many of them run away in boats. Many people plan to eat in the river. At night, the cold wind roared the roar of the robbers.
Although the wealthy, the possibilities and the beauty of the natural beauty spread in the rainy season, the beauty of the robbers continues to lose as the water recedes. The occupiers competed to grab the banks of the Dakatiya and cut off the land. In addition, contaminated factory waste is dumped at various locations. Due to the dumping of garbage in the houses and business establishments around the river bank, the water of the river is polluted and the infestation of mosquitoes and flies increases and various diseases spread. After not digging for many years, it turned into a dead end somewhere. At that time the river was deprived of the benefits of the river area farmers, traders and travel thirst.

The locals demanded to make the Dakatia river of Laksam, Manoharganj, Nangalkot a place of interest throughout the year by dredging it, but no effective initiative has been taken in this regard. On March 2, 2019, the concerned officials of the Water Development Board, LGED Executive Engineer visited the two banks of the Dakatiya river and announced the start of excavation and eviction operations, but no effective action was taken.
However, due to the sincerity and diligence of LGRD Minister Md. Tajul Islam MP, the farmers, traders and locals of the river area are seeing the light of hope for the return of navigability and pomp of the robbery. The Minister has continued various plans to restore the navigability of the river as well as to beautify the two banks of the river. In this context, Kabir Bin Anwar, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, has already visited the Laksam section of the Dakatia River.
Expressing hope that the navigability and splendor of the Dakatiyar River would be restored as before, the secretary said necessary steps would be taken soon so that traders and farmers could enjoy the benefits of the river through uninterrupted navigation. The people of greater Laksham are hopeful in the statement of the Secretary of the Ministry of Initiatives and Water Resources of the LGRD Minister. Their expectation is that the present government's growing development will be robbed of its wealth of resources, endless possibilities and unparalleled natural beauty.
